Today’s scripture after the first reading is not a psalm or canticle, but an excerpt from the book of Judith. Judith brought a great victory to Israel over the Assyrians by slaying the Assyrian leader. You can understand why the passage has been chosen for today’s Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. A woman helps bring about the deliverance of a people. Mary does her own type of slaying – not with a sword – but with an abuundance of roses falling from Juan Diego’s tilma which convinces the bishop that Mary has indeed spoken to Juan Diego. Poetry abounds in today’s readings. Poetry also abounds in Skinner Chavez-Melo’s beuatuful text and tune which we use today to celebrate the Mother of the Americas.
La Escritura de hoy, después de la primera lectura, no es un salmo ni un cántico, sino un fragmento del libro de Judit. Judit dio una gran victoria a Israel sobre los asirios al matar al jefe asirio. Comprenderán por qué se ha elegido este pasaje para la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Una mujer contribuye a la liberación de un pueblo. María hace su propio tipo de liberación, no con una espada, sino con una abundancia de rosas que caen de la tilma de Juan Diego, lo que convence al obispo de que María ha hablado realmente con Juan Diego. La poesía abunda en las lecturas de hoy. La poesía también abunda en el texto y la melodía de Skinner Chávez-Melo, que hoy utilizamos para celebrar a la Madre de las Américas.
