Fifth Sunday of Easter • Year B
Jesus, sacred mother tree,
sapwood sharing deep and free,
you send out power to renew
our Alleluia.

The text author, Hannah Brown, writes “One year I preached an Easter sermon on fungus: the amazing underground networks that connect trees so that the whole forest can operate as one organism.” Maybe we need to think of ourselves as an underground network not unlike fungus. We don’t always need to be the tree rising above everything or climbing to the top of a mountain to proclaim our faith. Jesus is the tree that rose above for us in the passion and resurrection. Jesus is the tree that gives us shade and welcomes us to sit under its branches. Jesus is the tree we are feeding off of to live Christian lives and to spread the faith outward. We can be underground or in the background using simple actions of kindness and faithfulness to connect those around us to Jesus and grow our community of believers. We need each other to thrive and to grow.

“Jesús, árbol madre sagrado, albura que compartes profunda y libre, envías poder para renovar nuestro Aleluya.”
La autora del texto, Hannah Brown, escribe: “Un año prediqué un sermón de Pascua sobre los hongos: las asombrosas redes subterráneas que conectan los árboles para que todo el bosque pueda funcionar como un solo organismo”. Quizá necesitemos pensar en nosotros mismos como una red subterránea no muy distinta de los hongos. No siempre necesitamos ser el árbol que se eleva por encima de todo o que sube a la cima de una montaña para proclamar nuestra fe. Jesús es el árbol que se elevó por nosotros en la pasión y la resurrección. Jesús es el árbol que nos da sombra y nos acoge para que nos sentemos bajo sus ramas. Jesús es el árbol del que nos alimentamos para vivir vidas cristianas y propagar la fe hacia fuera. Podemos estar bajo tierra o en segundo plano utilizando acciones sencillas de bondad y fidelidad para conectar a los que nos rodean con Jesús y hacer crecer nuestra comunidad de creyentes. Nos necesitamos unos a otros para prosperar y crecer.
