Fear not. We find this command quite often in the Scriptures, perhaps because we need to hear it again and again. When I am most frightened, anxious, desperate… I feel helpless and alone. Yet, God does not forsake us.
Saint John of the Cross, the mystical doctor of the Church whose feast day we celebrate today, described a more profound sense of the withdrawal of God’s presence as part of the Dark Night of the Soul. The spiritual journey is not without suffering, but God will see us through even an enduring crisis of faith.
No temas. Encontramos este mandamiento muy a menudo en las Escrituras, quizá porque necesitamos oírlo una y otra vez. Cuando estoy más asustado, ansioso, desesperado… me siento indefenso y solo. Sin embargo, Dios no nos abandona.
San Juan de la Cruz, el doctor místico de la Iglesia cuya fiesta celebramos hoy, describió un sentido más profundo de la retirada de la presencia de Dios como parte de la Noche Oscura del Alma.
