VIRGIN MOTHER, BRIDE OF CHRIST, MOTHER OF GOD—these are rich, profound, true titles for Mary. But the Magnificat gives us another, one just as true and deep.
[T]he root of the name Mary is the Hebrew Miryam meaning “rebellion.” How fitting for a people called to be a people of God, often in conflict with political authorities, whose infant sons were at times systematically slain by alien rulers, to name their daughters “hope of change.” And indeed, the daughters of Zion have a rich heroic tradition… From Genesis to Acts there is a line of women living lives of religious vitality, cultural integrity, and political involvement while performing deeds that powerfully transformed the nation of Israel and ultimately the modern world. As Tony Alonso states in his notes on this piece, “Mary is a source of hope and strength, binding the church to her, to one another, and to God.” Mary sings for this hope and strength in the Magnificat. Mary intercedes for us to the Father and in this role of intercessor, she opens herself to our petitions, our burdens, and our hopes. This litany reminds of us all of the ways Mary is a part of our lives and all of the roles that she plays as any mother does. Today we celebrate that Mary was taken up into heaven, body and soul. In her completeness in heaven, she is a model for what we hope will one day be true for us in the resurrection. Bring all that you have and all that you are to Mary for she waits for you with open arms. Mary, our Mother, pray for us!
