Thanks to this year’s calendar, we pivot directly from Sunday Advent readings into this evening’s start of the Christmas season. There is no better figure to bridge this transition than Mary, a mere teenager to whom the angel of the Lord appears with news that would upend her entire concept of life, marriage and motherhood. Troubled and confused, she ultimately chooses complete trust in the Lord, thereby setting into motion the story of our salvation. In Spanish, the expression for giving birth is “dar a luz” (that, to bring to or to give light). It is a beautiful way to frame the miracle of God-with-Us. Indeed, Mary’s trust allowed the divine light growing within her to come forth into this world and cast away the darkness. And tonight, all heaven and earth shall rejoice.
Gracias al calendario de este año, pasamos directamente de las lecturas dominicales de Adviento al inicio, esta tarde, del tiempo de Navidad. No hay mejor figura para salvar esta transición que María, una simple adolescente a la que se le aparece el ángel del Señor con una noticia que pondrá patas arriba todo su concepto de la vida, el matrimonio y la maternidad. Atribulada y confusa, opta finalmente por confiar plenamente en el Señor, poniendo así en marcha la historia de nuestra salvación. En español, la expresión para dar a luz es “dar a luz”. Es una hermosa manera de enmarcar el milagro de Dios-con-nosotros. En efecto, la confianza de María permitió que la luz divina que crecía en su interior viniera a este mundo y desterrara las tinieblas. Y esta noche, todo el cielo y la tierra se alegrarán.
