Today’s gospel reading contains a trio of parables, with a recurrent message: God has things under control, down to the smallest details. When we hear about the difference between the wheat and the weeds in the first parable, it is tempting to reduce the lesson to the differences between “good guys” and “bad guys.” What if the real lesson is a caution to each of us not to get caught up “in the weeds” ourselves? We’ve been given good ground for hope. We can truly trust in our merciful and gracious God to bring forth justice and salvation.

La lectura del Evangelio de hoy tiene tres parábolas con un mensaje recurrente: Dios tiene las cosas bajo control, hasta en los detalles más pequeños. Cuando oímos hablar de la diferencia entre el trigo y la cizaña en la primera parábola, resulta tentador reducir la lección a las diferencias entre “buenos” y “malos”. ¿Y si la verdadera lección es una advertencia a cada uno de nosotros para que no quedemos nosotros mismos atrapados “en la cizaña”? Se nos ha dado un buen motivo para la esperanza. Podemos confiar de verdad en nuestro Dios misericordioso y bondadoso para que haga surgir la justicia y la salvación.
