Fifth Sunday of Lent • Year B
“Unless a grain of wheat shall fall upon the ground and die,
it shall remain but a single grain and not give life.
But if it dies it shall bear fruit to the world.”

In the Year B Gospel reading this Sunday, Jesus gives a rather bleak but frank assessment of the events he knows are about to unfold. Comparing the almighty Messiah to a single seed, he reminds us that without falling to the ground (which he will under the weight of the cross) and dying, a seed has no chance of bearing fruit. Once it dies, however, the resulting new life it brings is plentiful and abundant. Knowing he is that grain of wheat about to get crushed, our Savior’s very real susceptibility to human pain and fear is revealed as he grapples with the imminent suffering at hand: “What should I say? Save me from this hour?” In that moment, his divinity assures his own humanity: “It was for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name.”

En la lectura del Evangelio del Año B de este domingo, Jesús hace una descripción bastante sombría pero franca de los acontecimientos que sabe que están a punto de desencadenarse. Comparando al todopoderoso Mesías con una simple semilla, nos recuerda que sin caer al suelo (lo que hará bajo el peso de la cruz) y morir, una semilla no tiene ninguna posibilidad de dar fruto. Sin embargo, una vez que muere, la nueva vida resultante es abundante y plena. Sabiendo que él es ese grano de trigo a punto de ser aplastado, la vulnerabilidad real de nuestro Salvador ante el dolor y el miedo humano se pone de manifiesto cuando se enfrenta al sufrimiento que se aproxima: “¿Qué debo decir? ¿Sálvame de esta hora?”. En ese momento, su divinidad asegura su propia humanidad: “Para esto he venido a esta hora. Padre, glorifica tu nombre”.
