Palm Sunday • Year B
Cloaked in the dark, a night of betrayal,
sacrifice and denial,
God, help us face the temptation ahead;
spare us the time of trial.

Cloaked in the dark. We may think of a cloak as something symbolizing royalty and importance. And indeed it did when Jesus was joyfully welcomed into Jerusalem. But hidden beneath that cloak was betrayal. The same people who welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem give into the temptation to ask for Barabbas to be released to them and for Jesus to be crucified. Jesus trades that cloak of royalty for the seamless tunic that will bear the weight of the cross and later the burial cloths that cover Jesus for three days in the tomb. The darkness of sacrifice and denial will ring true in the liturgies we celebrate this coming week. What darkness in ourselves are we cloaking? What darkness have we been working towards eradicating this Lent? When Jesus is revealed alive in the resurrection, can we too reveal a newness within so that we can be cloaked in the light?

Envuelta en la oscuridad, una noche de traición,
sacrificio y negación,
Dios, ayúdanos a afrontar la tentación que nos espera;
perdónanos el tiempo de la prueba.
Envuelta en la oscuridad. Podemos pensar que un manto simboliza realeza e importancia.Y así era cuando Jesús fue recibido con alegría en Jerusalén. Pero bajo ese manto se escondía la traición. El mismo pueblo que acogió a Jesús en Jerusalén cede a la tentación de pedir que les suelten a Barrabás y que crucifiquen a Jesús. Jesús cambia ese manto de realeza por la túnica sin costuras que soportará el peso de la cruz y, más tarde, los paños mortuorios que cubrirán a Jesús durante tres días en el sepulcro. La oscuridad del sacrificio y la negación resonarán en las liturgias que celebraremos esta semana. ¿Qué tinieblas ocultamos en nosotros mismos? ¿Qué tinieblas nos hemos esforzado por erradicar esta Cuaresma? Cuando Jesús se revela vivo en la resurrección, ¿podemos nosotros también revelar una novedad interior para que nos cubra la luz?
