The Holy Family • December 31, 2023

What do we consider a holy family? A family full of love? A family that eats dinner together every night? A family that prays together? The list could go on and on. We set all of these parameters and benchmarks for what we think a holy family should be, but the reality is that what makes a family holy is the bonds that they have with each other. They may not physically be together, but they feel each other’s care and concern for each other. They desire to be together. Those people that you want most to share your life with, those people are your family. Mary and Joseph wanted to share their lives with each other, even after the angel Gabriel threw their plans up in the air and told Mary she would give birth to the Son of God. The Holy Spirit is working among us here on earth because God wants to be connected to us, God’s children, always. Even when we feel like we are abandoned and alone, Jesus sends us people who are full of love, care and compassion to accompany us. Today we celebrate the bonds that we have with those most important to us who create our earthly family as we await to join the heavenly family of angels and saints.

¿Qué consideramos una sagrada familia? ¿Una familia llena de amor? ¿Una familia que cena junta todas las noches? ¿Una familia que ora unida? La lista podría seguir y seguir. Establecemos todos estos parámetros y puntos de referencia para lo que creemos que debería ser una familia sagrada, pero la realidad es que lo que hace que una familia sea santa son los vínculos que tienen entre sí. Puede que no estén juntos físicamente, pero sienten el cuidado y la preocupación mutuos. Desean estar juntos. Esas personas con las que más deseas compartir tu vida, esas personas son tu familia. María y José querían compartir sus vidas el uno con el otro, incluso después de que el ángel Gabriel arruinó sus planes y le dijo a María que daría a luz al Hijo de Dios. El Espíritu Santo está obrando entre nosotros aquí en la tierra porque Dios quiere estar conectado con nosotros, los hijos de Dios, siempre. Incluso cuando nos sentimos abandonados y solos, Jesús nos envía personas llenas de amor, cuidado y compasión para acompañarnos. Hoy celebramos los vínculos que tenemos con aquellos más importantes para nosotros que crean nuestra familia terrenal mientras esperamos unirnos a la familia celestial de ángeles y santos.
