Behold the Lamb of God: Seven Eucharistic Ostinatos, Alan Hommerding
“Behold the Lamb of God.” We hear these words at every Mass, but it is unlikely that we call to mind John the Baptist, our fellow disciple who first spoke them. The Gospel of John, unlike the others, contains no Baptism of Jesus scene, yet—like the others—it does contain a theophany, a God-revealing proclamation. This one comes not from a cloud, but from John the Baptist, who today still continues to lead us to God revealed in Christ, the Lamb of God. Perhaps this day we might offer a brief prayer of gratitude for John the Baptist.

“He aquí el Cordero de Dios”. Escuchamos estas palabras en cada Misa, pero es poco probable que recordemos a Juan el Bautista, nuestro condiscípulo que las pronunció por primera vez. El Evangelio de Juan, a diferencia de los demás, no contiene ninguna escena del bautismo de Jesús, pero, como los demás, sí contiene una teofanía, una proclamación reveladora de Dios. Éste no viene de una nube, sino de Juan Bautista, que todavía hoy continúa conduciéndonos a Dios revelado en Cristo, el Cordero de Dios. Quizás este día podamos ofrecer una breve oración de gratitud por Juan Bautista.
