Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time • 8.20.23

In reading Alice Parker’s notes on this piece, two elements she discusses lend themselves well to correlations with our faith. She describes the repetitions of phrases as reinforcement of the sound of the piece. Each week we come to the Eucharistic liturgy to do repeated actions such as hear the Word of God and receive the Body and Blood of Christ. Even though we might not feel like we instantaneously gain something from going to mass, just the simple act of being there and recalling Christ’s death and resurrection subconsciously reinforces the faith deep inside of us. Another compositional characteristic is the interplay between the rise and fall of the melody line and the staticness of the pedal line. Our lives are full of ups and downs and twists and turns just as this melody line is shaped throughout the piece. The presence of God, or whatever other element is our underlying foundation in our lives, functions as the static pedal line supporting the melody line of our lives. When we’re at an especially low point in our melodies, we need to remember that under everything in our lives, we have God on our side supporting us.

Al leer las notas de Alice Parker sobre este artículo, dos elementos que analiza se prestan bien a las correlaciones con nuestra fe. Describe las repeticiones de frases como refuerzo del sonido de la pieza. Cada semana venimos a la liturgia Eucarística para hacer acciones repetidas como escuchar la Palabra de Dios y recibir el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. Aunque no sintamos que ganamos algo instantáneamente al ir a misa, el simple hecho de estar allí y recordar la muerte y resurrección de Cristo refuerza inconscientemente la fe en lo más profundo de nosotros. Otra característica compositiva es la interacción entre la subida y bajada de la línea melódica y la estática de la línea de los pedales. Nuestras vidas están llenas de altibajos y giros y vueltas al igual que esta línea de melodía se forma a lo largo de la pieza. La presencia de Dios, o cualquier otro elemento que sea nuestro fundamento subyacente en nuestras vidas, funciona como la línea de pedal estática que sostiene la línea melódica de nuestras vidas. Cuando estamos en un punto especialmente bajo en nuestras melodías, debemos recordar que debajo de todo en nuestras vidas, tenemos a Dios de nuestro lado apoyándonos.
